Brocoli is pleased to announce a split LP release of two previously unpublished works that bring together two established composers for the first time.

On one side (who knows if it is side A or side B?) we find Silvain Vanot, who was at the forefront of 90s French indie rock alongside the likes of Dominique A and Jean-Louis Murat. He has also collaborated with Jim O'Rourke.

The other (side B or perhaps side A?) goes to Pierre-Yves Macé, a stalwart of the label. A composer of instrumental (his work is regularly performed by the Ensemble Intercontemporain) and electroacoustic music.

At first glance the reason for bringing these two artists together may not seem obvious. And yet... these two pieces are both built upon the same principle: they are both instrumental music set in urban outdoor spaces.

For Silvain Vanot this meant walking at dawn with his portable recorder in the Butte Montmartre, Paris. Then, once in the studio, improvising over these field recordings. Five locations resulting in five tracks. All recorded in one take.

Pierre-Yves Macé first wrote a score for trombone, horn, oboe and percussion. He then recorded each musician separately at a different location in Paris. Finally, reassembling the piece in the studio. He allowed himself to be guided as much by the score as from the happy coincidences which occurred during the recordings.

As coherent as it is surprising this split LP navigates with ease between field recording, contemporary music, improvisation, ambient and musique concrète.

Brocoli est fier de vous présenter deux nouvelles œuvres inédites, réunies sur un split-lp, édité uniquement en vinyle, et réunissant pour la première fois deux compositeurs émérites. Sur une Face (est-ce la Face A ou la Face B, on ne le saura jamais), on retrouve Silvain Vanot, auteur-compositeur-interprète, au premier plan du rock indé français aux côtés de Dominique A ou de Jean-Louis Murat, ayant collaboré avec Jim O’Rourke, et qui rejoint pour la première fois Brocoli. Sur l’autre Face (est-ce la Face B ou la Face A ?), un habitué du label, Pierre-Yves Macé, compositeur aussi à l’aide dans la musique instrumentale (son œuvre est régulièrement jouée par l’Ensemble Intercontemporain) que dans la musique électroacoustique.

A première vue, les raisons de regrouper ces deux artistes sur le même disque ne semblent pas évidentes. Et pourtant... Les deux pièces proposées sont construites selon le même principe, puisqu’il s’agit dans les deux cas de musique instrumentale associée à des espaces extérieurs urbains. Silvain Vanot a en effet arpenté au petit matin la butte Montmartre à Paris, muni d’un enregistreur portable, et a ensuite, en studio, improvisé sur ces enregistrements. Cinq lieux différents donnent naissance à cinq titres, tous enregistrés en une seule prise.

Pierre-Yves Macé a quant à lui écrit une partition pour trombone, cor, hautbois et percussion, puis enregistré chacun des instrumentistes dans des lieux différents de la capitale, avant de recomposer l’ensemble en studio, se laissant guider autant par la partition que par les heureux hasards des enregistrements. Ainsi, ce split-lp aussi cohérent que surprenant navigue avec aisance entre field recording, musique contemporaine, improvisation, ambient et musique concrète.
